Description
The earliest printed map of Taiwan or Formosa. Oriented to the east, with north at the left, covering the entire island and the nearby Pescadores, now known as the Penghu Islands, and the nautical route to Chinese coastal province of Fujian.
Soundings appear around the Pescadores, along the west coast of Taiwan, and extend to the Chinese coast.
The interior is largely dominated by depictions of hills and forests, with obvious deltas and marsh lands covering the western half of the island.
The map was based Johannes Vingboons’ 1640 manuscript map of Formosa. Vingboons based his famous map upon information leaned during the brief Dutch occupation of Formosa between 1624 and 1662.
The map appeared in Valentijn's book Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien (Dordrecht/Amsterdam 1724/26). With in the right bottom corner the imprint J.van Braam en G. onder de Linden . ¤
