Description

An attractive map of the areas of control under the ancient Egyptian King Sesostris. These comprised Egypt and Ethiopia, Asian Turkey, parts of the Middle East and Persia. With good map detail, and furnished with mileage scales and a decorative title plinth. This map was published by Homann Heirs of Nuremberg, after J.M. Hase.
The most important historical maps of the Homann publishing house are the larger, as well as the smaller sized maps by Johann Matthias Hase (1684-1742), a professor at the university of Wittenberg.
Hase, was the son of a teacher of mathematics in Augsburg, who first studied theology in Helmstedt, and from 1704 mathematics in Leipzig. Through his work as a private teacher for a noble family in Augsburg he took a closer look at geography and cartography.
In 1719 he became a professor for mathematics at the university of Wittenberg, where he worked for more than 22 years.
Sesostris was the name of a king of ancient Egypt who, according to Herodotus, led a military expedition into parts of Europe.
