Description

Monumental engraving showing the Colloseum in Rome, in its setting, with below a ground-plan and elevation.

Engraved and drawn by Alessandro Specchi (1668-1729), an engraver and architect from Rome, who refers to himself at the lower right-hand side of the picture. He was a pupil of Carlo Fontana, the architect of the façade of S. Marcello. Specchi, who was also a member of the Accademia San Luca, began his career as an engraver in 1684 and assisted Carlo Fontana in his work from 1690 onwards.
He was a well-known architect in his lifetime. His works include many buildings in Rome. But he also wrote a work on the architecture "Studio d'architecttura civile", which contains 153 prints.

Domenico de' Rossi (1659–1730) was an Italian sculptor and engraver. In 1709 Domenico inherited the printshop of Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, by the church of Santa Maria della Pace, the largest and most long-lived publisher of the Roman baroque. Several generations of the de' Rossi participated in the family publishing firm established in the 17th century, which continued to produce engravings for the use of designers.
