Description
Monumental engraving showing the Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, in its setting, with below a coat of arms with dedication to Cardinal Sigismondo Chigi. Obilisk and two fountains in front, adjacent buildings and carriages and people in foreground.
Engraved and drawn by Gio Batta Falda, an engraver and architect from Rome, who refers to himself at the lower right-hand side of the picture.
He was a well-known architect in his lifetime. His works include many buildings in Rome.
Published by Domenico de' Rossi (1659–1730) was an Italian sculptor and engraver. In 1709 Domenico inherited the printshop of Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, by the church of Santa Maria della Pace, the largest and most long-lived publisher of the Roman baroque. Several generations of the de' Rossi participated in the family publishing firm established in the 17th century, which continued to produce engravings for the use of designers.
