Description

Original chromo lithographed medium size poster, "Quinquina Dubonnet, apéritif dans tous les cafés", by CHERET, signed in the plate. Supplement to "Courrier Français", of June 16, 1895.
One of the many products Chéret’s merry redhead promoted was Quinquina Dubonnet, an herb-based fortified wine blended with quinine. In this insert for Le Courrier Français, she is seen toasting the skies while looking temptingly over her shoulder at the viewer. The design was originally conceived the year prior, but appeared in the weekly newspaper on February 16, 1896. This is the smaller format.

Jules Chéret (1836-1932) is known as the Maître de l'Affiche, or the 'Father of the poster'. This is primarily due to his ground-breaking developments in the colour lithographic process, but can also be attributed to his prolific output and ostentatious style: Chéret was capable of rendering even the most banal of subjects sensational.

Here advertising the apéritif, Quinquina Dubonnet, Chéret has drawn on one of his compositional standbys: an attractive and fashionably dressed young woman holding a bottle of the advertised product.
