Description

A finely designed map from the great Blaeu family of Amsterdam. With decorative title cartouche. The cartouches and decorations are colored artistically.

There are very good detail and towns in modern-day Uzbekistan. The region here is labeled as "BUCCARA" and "SAMARCHAND" and "SIRISITUR", with the important cities along the Silk Road are mentioned Samarchand (Samarkand),  etc.

The lower right corner has a dedication to Theodorus Tholing and a date of 1634. This is the first state (of 3).
From early on Willem Jansz. Blaeu aimed of publishing an atlas to compete with the Hondius-Jansson Atlas. By 1630, he had published at least 17 folio-size maps.
Blaeu realized his plan soon after acquiring the copper plates of the atlas maps by Jodocus Hondius. The Appendix followed in 1630.
In 1635, he finally realized an "international edition" of a world atlas, the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum."
