Description

This is a detailed steel-engraved map of the ancient world, stretching from Europe eastwards to the Black Sea and beyond, southwards through northern Africa, Arabia, India, and Siam.

To the east of the Caspian Sea, we see the area of present-day Uzbekistan and Kazakstan. The area is labeled SOGDIANA. Sogdiana is the name of a historical area on the territory of present-day Uzbekistan located in the basin of the Zerafshan and Kashkadarya rivers. The cities Bokara (Bukhara), Samarcand (Samarkand), Taskent (Tashkent), along the Silk Road are mentioned.
These cities benefited handsomely from open trade and maintained trade networks during political stability.
The map's text is in Latin reflecting the classical nature of its content.

The Arrowsmith family members were among the nineteenth-century's most respected and influential cartographers. Taken from 'The London Atlas of Universal Geography…'

John Arrowsmith (1790-1873) joined his uncle, Aaron Arrowsmith, in mapmaking in London in 1810. Upon his uncle's death in 1823, Aaron's two sons, Samuel and Aaron, carried on the business.
In 1839, John took over the business. This atlas was first published in 1834. His maps were numerous, and his neatness and finished style earned him an extensive reputation.
