Description
A delightful small engraving of the lively Paris Carnival, seen travelling down the Boulevard des Italiens. Traditionally, the carnival begins the day after Epiphany, or the 7th of January, and lasts until Lent. Dances, feasts, and marriages are mainly held during carnival.
This particular engraving shows men on stilts, a horse drawn carriage with a clown, a native Indian man from 'the new world', a dancing bear, a man 'riding' a horse, a physician trying to thrust a clyster into a poor unsuspecting patient, a jester, a very small person, and a man blowing a trumpet.
