Description
Propaganda map, produced under the NAZI collaborating Vichy French regime and designed to inspire revulsion and hatred of the English among the French, while frequently described as a 'Vichy' map is likely to have been printed in Paris by the Propaganda-Abteilung Frankreich, the German propaganda unit in occupied France.
First published ca. 1941, the present example was reproduced circa 1960.
A grotesque octopus, with the face of Winston Churchill, is shown attempting to seize various French colonial possessions. The demonic Churchill, eyes burning with fury, has the full red lips seen in many anti-Semitic caricatures of the period, popularized by such magazines as "Der Stürmer".The tentacles of the octopus have been several in seven places, all of which purport to show British defeats during the first two years of the war. The most significant locations for its French audience would have been Dakar and Mers-el-Kébir in North Africa and its former colonies in the Levant.
In top 'CONFIANCE...' (Have Confidence…) and in bottom 'Ses Amputations Se / Poursuivent Méthodiquement' (His Amputations Are Being Methodically Executed), printed in white on blue ground.
Philip Curtis in War Maps: Propaganda pieces produced by defeated or discredited regimes rarely survive the downfall of their creators. The unattractive consequences of being found after 1944 with such a vicious caricature of Winston Churchill with its associated taint of collaborationism makes this one of the rarest of pictorial maps.
