Description

Very rare and beautiful plan of the city and bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, detailing the projects of expansion of the port undertaken in 1780.
The plan indicates the Artha Rock, the fishermen's houses, the site of the former fort, the depot stores for the cod and whale vessels, the quarries from which the moilon (the ancient name of the rubble stone, limestone stone) is pulled for the works of the Socoa quarter, the chapel and battery Sainte-Barbe, and the basin containing 100 ships.

On the sides are two columns of remarks on the value of the port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz where "one can build King's ships of the first force and at less expense".
The work carried out in the port of Saint-Jean-de-Luz was similar to that carried out from 1783 in the port of Cherbourg, with which Saint-Jean-de-Luz competed.

The plan was engraved by Thouars and Dupuis, and dedicated to the Comte d'Artois, future Charles X, with the coat of arms of the dedicatee at the bottom of the plan. Very rare.
